Connectivity & Relationships

36” wide x 24” height on textured cellulose (Hahnemühle) - created with very high archival standards

Painted completely within a vector graphics program called Inkscape - February, 2024

I have been experimenting with curved patterns and wanted to create something where the computer was more involved.

Vector graphics makes it very easy to create curved lines - so I sketched out the overall design with a few main lines.

I then replicated each main line and scaled them down or up - sometimes one or two lines at a time.

After scaling, I would change the lines’ color (alternating between red and orange).

The end points were stretched out to the edge of the page, and then I adjusted the curvature to blend with the other lines.

This process took oodles of patience.

After creating all the curved lines, I had to deal with the conflicts where curved lines ran into each other.

The conflicts are actually what is called a moiré.

Zooming in and out was required to get the whole configuration setup properly.

Definitely my engineering training of resolving issues was put to a test.

The piece took 2-1/2 weeks of daily work - about 3-4 hours per day.

Trying to do more work in a day did not lead to good results as it was too intense for the eyes and brain.

The final print, on paper, takes advantage of the paper’s texture to highlight the patterns even more.

1 print was created at 36” wide x 24” height.
